Every vote for BJP is a vote for expensive petrol & diesel: Harpal Singh Cheema

PT News Jalandhar, May 25

PT News

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders including Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, attacked the BJP-led Central Government over the repeated hike in petrol and diesel prices over the last 10 days. They said petrol and diesel have become nearly Rs.8 per litre costlier after four consecutive hikes, pushing farmers, transporters, traders and middle-class families into deeper financial distress. They revealed that while inflation continues to rise, the Modi Government is burdening ordinary people to benefit big corporate houses. The leaders said the diesel price hike during the paddy sowing season will directly hit farmers and further increase the cost of transportation and essential commodities across the country.

On this, addressing a press conference, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated, “The Centre’s continuous increase in petrol and diesel prices over the past few days has exposed the BJP Government’s inability to control inflation and protect people from economic hardship.” He continued, “The repeated hikes in fuel prices between May 15 and May 25 have created an alarming situation across the country. Petrol prices were increased by Rs.3.29 per litre on May 15, followed by another increase of Rs.Rs.0.96 on May 19, Rs.0.94 on May 23 and a further steep hike of Rs.2.87 per litre on May 25. In just ten days, petrol prices have been increased by ?8.06 per litre. This clearly shows the anti-people mindset of the BJP Government, which is continuously squeezing the common man instead of providing relief.” Harpal Singh Cheema said, “Diesel prices were increased by Rs.3.11 per litre on May 15, followed by hikes of Rs.0.94 on May 19, Rs.0.95 on May 23 and another increase of Rs.2.80 per litre on May 25. Diesel prices have also risen by nearly Rs.8 per litre within ten days. Farmers, transporters, labourers and traders are being crushed under this manufactured fuel price burden.”

As mercury slides, IMD predicts rain, hail in Punjab and Haryana for 5 days from May 27

PT News New Delhi, May 25

As the mercury slipped back to near normal in the past two days in north-west India, the weather office has predicted a five-day wet spell over parts of Punjab and Haryana from May 27, which could bring further relief in many parts of the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the possibility of isolated rain in Haryana on May 27, 28 and 31 and in Punjab on May 28 and 31. Fairly widespread rain is expected in both the states on May 29 and 30. Hailstorm is also expected at a few places in these states on May 28 and 29, along with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with speeds up to 60 kmph. Eastern parts of Punjab and southern and north-eastern parts of Haryana are likely to receive more rain thnt other areas. Despite the forecast of rain, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are possible at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana on May 26 and 27, particularly the southern parts of Punjab and western and southern parts of Haryana.

IMD has not reported any heatwave over Punjab during the past two days, whereas a heatwave occurred over Sirsa and Rohtak in Haryana, with the mercury touching 46.2 degrees Celsius. Day temperatures were normal in Punjab over the past 24 hours, but above normal in parts of Haryana, while night temperatures in both states, which witnessed heatwaves and warm nights on several days earlier this month, were normal. Light rain occurred at isolated places in Punjab during this period, whereas the weather remained dry in Haryana. Gusty winds were experienced at isolated places in both the states. Rainfall for the month of May so far has been deficient by 32 per cent in Punjab and by 3 per cent in Haryana. According to IMD, a western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over Jammu and its neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level persists, and a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect north-west India from May 28.

Nirmala Sitharaman Defends PM Modi’s Austerity Call

Hits out at critics for 'Peddling Pessimism'

PT News New Delhi, May 25

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s austerity call, stressing the need to focus on the “3Fs” – fuel, fertiliser and forex – amid the West Asia crisis. Speaking at the 37th foundation day event of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) here, she also hit out against naysayers who have built a cynical and pessimistic narrative after the Prime Minister’s appeal and underlined that India cannot afford fearmongering at this stage. The crisis is borne by external events, and the domestic economy continues to be positive and resilient, the finance minister said.

Naysayers have created a “cynical and pessimistic narrative” after the Prime Minister’s appeal for austerity, she said, stressing that such observations are factually incorrect. “It (the narrative) is wrong because it is fear-mongering. India cannot afford fear-mongering. We need to give confidence to the people with our words and with our actions,” she said. Fuel prices are high, gold prices have climbed to elevated levels, creating concerns on the external front, and there is an “unimaginable increase” in the fertiliser prices, she said, contextualising the call made by the Prime Minister. Therefore, there is a need to look at conserving the forex, she said, adding that there is a need to focus on the 3Fs of fuel, fertilisers and forex in the current context. Stating that India’s policy response has been calibrated to preserve domestic growth, Sitharaman said the cut in diesel and petrol excise duties will lead to a revenue impact of Rs 1 lakh crore.

Some “naysayers” have jumped into the debate following the Prime Minister’s appeal, claiming that everything is “crumbling”, which is factually incorrect, she said, listing out a slew of indicators showing buoyancy in the economy, including GST collections and automobile sales. “All the good that is being done by the common people themselves is forgotten. And a pessimistic, cynical narrative is generated, which is just not right,” she said. “We should appreciate that the challenges are more externally driven. We must also recognise that India’s domestic economic situation remains positive and resilient even today,” the finance minister said. She also highlighted that the issue of Rs 8.1 lakh crore locked in delayed payments for MSMEs is impacting their working capital and growth, and urged public sector undertakings not to exceed the 45-day window to make payments to them.

By Baljit Singh Brar

New Delhi, May 25

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday conferred the Padma Vibhushan on Bollywood actor Dharmendra posthumously and classical musician and violinist N Rajam at a Civil Investiture Ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here. Dharmendra’s award for exceptional and distin- guished service in the field of art was received by his wife and MP Hema Malini. Rajam was honoured for her pioneering contribution to Indian classical music, espe- cially for revolutionising vio- lin performance through the ‘Gayaki Ang’ style that repli- cates vocal music on the instrument. Murmu con- ferred the Padma Bhushan on Bhagat Singh Koshyari, former Uttarakhand chief minister; Shatavadhani R Ganesh, acclaimed polymath who revived the challenging classical Indian art form ‘Avadhana’; Uday Suresh Kumar Kotak, founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank; and gastroenterologist Kallipatti Ramasamy Palaniswamy.
