Launching a scathing attack on the Union Government over the relentless surge in fuel prices, senior Congress leader and former Punjab Minister Vijay Inder Singla today stated that skyrocketing petrol and diesel rates have become an unbearable burden on ordinary Indian families. Singla slammed the government for its complete disconnect from ground realities, pointing out that repeated hikes in recent days have severely crippled household budgets across the country, turning essential living into an everyday struggle for the common man.

Singla emphasized that the impact of fuel price hikes is not limited to vehicle owners but triggers a vicious cycle of inflation that hits every section of society. Every hike in diesel directly inflates transport logistics, leading to an immediate rise in the prices of daily essentials like vegetables, milk, and medicines. The salaried middle class, workers, and homemakers are caught in a double whammy of stagnant incomes and a soaring cost of living. Furthermore, increased school bus fees and rising operational costs for small traders are squeezing families that are already financially vulnerable, while farmers who rely heavily on diesel for tractors and irrigation pumps are seeing their input costs skyrocket. Exposing the flawed narrative around fuel pricing, Singla brought forward stark facts regarding global crude oil dynamics versus domestic taxation. He pointed out that the nation is witnessing a bizarre economic model where global crude oil prices are significantly lower than they were in 2014, yet citizens are paying record-high prices at the pump. When global crude oil prices collapsed over the years, instead of passing the benefits of cheaper oil to the public, the Union Government chose to sharply increase excise duties and retain them for years to fill its own coffers.

“A responsible government must stand with its people in difficult times, not place an even greater financial burden on citizens already under immense stress.” Singla stated that In agrarian economies like Punjab, this engineered inflation strikes at the very root of input cost survival, directly multiplying the operational costs of field preparation, irrigation, paddy cultivation, and fertilizer logistics for farmers already crushed under compressed crop margins and thin market returns. Farmers who rely heavily on diesel are seeing their input costs skyrocket, thereby accelerating a structural crisis in the rural economy. He said, at a time when the public rightfully expects economic relief and hand-holding from the government, they are instead being forced to bear the brunt of relentless taxation and economic mismanagement. According to Singla, the people of India deserve transparency, accountability.

Innocent Hearts’ Institutions On the birth anniversary of Innocent Hearts Founder, Late Mrs. Kamlesh Bowry, the Bowry Memorial Educational and Medical Trust launched the ‘Kamlesh Vision Program’ under Disha: An Initiative. The program has been dedicated as a tribute to the visionary leadership, compassion, and lifelong commitment of Late Mrs. Kamlesh Bowry towards education and social welfare.

On this occasion, Dr. Rohan Bowry shared that, in collaboration with Innocent Hearts Eye Centre, a pilot program is being launched under which all children across the various branches of schools and colleges will undergo vision screening in the coming months. This initiative will benefit students of all five Innocent Hearts Schools, Innocent Hearts College of Education, and Innocent Hearts Group of Institutions, enabling thousands of learners to receive systematic vision screening and awareness support.

Recognizing that healthy vision plays a vital role in a child’s learning and overall development, the program aims to ensure the early identification and management of common eye-related issues. A team of qualified ophthalmologists and optometrists from Innocent Hearts Eye Center ,will conduct comprehensive eye examinations for students within the campus- es. These screenings will help identify refractive errors, squint and eye align- ment disorders, early signs of amblyopia (lazy eye), and digital eye strain. Following the examination, each stu- dent will be provided with a ‘Vision Status Card,’ while parents of students requir- ing further evaluation or treatment will be informed and guided accordingly.

Sharing information about the initiative,representatives of the Trust stated that the ‘Kamlesh Vision Program’ reflects the values of care, sensitivity, and service that Late Mrs. Kamlesh Bowry upheld throughout her life. By promoting preventive eye care and timely inter- vention, the program will support students in realizing their full academic and per- sonal potential. Through this meaningful CSR initia- tive, the Bowry Memorial Educational and Medical Trust continues its commit- ment to bringing positive change to society and keep- ing alive the inspiring legacy of Late Mrs. Kamlesh Bowry through initiatives focused on health, well-being, and the holistic development of students.

A 34-year-old man allegedly killed his wife and died by suicide over her extramarital affair in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district, triggering a chain of events where the woman’s paramour also ended his life, police said on Monday. The man strangled his 28-year-old wife at their house in Indore city’s Hira Nagar area on Sunday, allegedly following a dispute over her extramarital affair, and then committed suicide by consuming poison, an official said. He said that in a suicide note recovered from the scene, the husband alleged that a man living in Pithampur had seduced his wife, established physical relations with her and had threatened to circulate private photos of her on social media.

Sitarist Anoushka Shankar has revealed that an awkward fan encounter reminded her of past abuse and left her thinking about why she still finds it difficult to maintain personal boundaries. The Grammy-nominated artist, who is the daughter of sitarist Ravi Shankar, opened up in 2013 about being sexually abused as a child by a man her parents trusted.

In a post on Sunday, Shankar, 44, said the latest fan encounter left her conflicted.

“A man picked me up last weekend. I mean, physically lifted me. He asked if he could, but didn’t wait for an answer before I found myself suspended in the air, clasped in a bear hug by a stranger, feet dangling. I had been meeting a few fans after a show and it all happened so fast. I laughed awkwardly and asked to be let down, I signed his poster, I smiled and waved,” Shankar recalled in the post.

The musician said she thought and still believes that the man had “no ill intent” and was simply overexcited and thoughtless, but when she narrated the encounter, those around her were shocked and upset.

Days later, the reality has sunk in. Once again, my history of abuse meant I didn’t know how to respond appropriately to someone crossing my boundaries in real time. I centred his hypothetical intent over my lived experience of discomfort. “When this happens feelings of shame, dismay and frustration can arise. How can I still be grappling with these never-ending nuances? I have come so far in this process of healing yet a single moment can show me further wounds still enclosed within. Another layer of childhood’s memories resurfacing and shedding,” she recalled.

Shankar said she shared this to to encourage others in their journey towards healing.

“The path of healing curves and is never linear. If you lost your voice again for a moment, remember you can find it, always, within. The gulf between our bodies, our emotions, and how our minds are able to read them is narrowing with every moment that separates us from our past,” the musician added.

ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਸੀਟੂ ਦੇ ਸੂਬਾਈ ਮੀਤ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਕਾਮਰੇਡ ਸੁਖਬੀਰ ਅਮਾਨਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਮੀਨੀ ਪੱਧਰ ’ਤੇ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਇਲਾਕਾ ਵਾਰ ਮੀਟਿੰਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਿਲਸਿਲਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ 30 ਮਈ ਨੂੰ ‘ਸੀਟੂ’ ਦਾ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਦਿਵਸ ਮੁੱਖ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਬੜੇ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਇਲਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਕਰ ਸ਼ਮੂਲੀਅਤ ਕਰਨਗੇ।

ਕਾਮਰੇਡ ਸੁਖਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਮਾਨਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਤੇ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਜਨ-ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ, ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਵਧ ਰਹੀ ਮਹਿੰਗਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਾਨੂੰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਲ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਪੋਰੇਟ ਪੱਖੀ ਨਵੇਂ ਕਾਨੂੰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਗੂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ 19 ਜੂਨ ਨੂੰ ‘ਵਿੱਕੀ ਕੋਠੀ’ ਅਤੇ 20 ਜੂਨ ਨੂੰ ‘ਬੁਢੀ ਰੋਡ’ ਨੇੜੇ ਰੇਲਵੇ ਫਾਟਕ ਵਿਖੇ ਰੋਸ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਮੋਰਚਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੈਲੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਮਕਸਦ ਆਮ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਗਰੂਕਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਇੱਕ ਤਿੱਖਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਣਾਇਕ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕਮਿਊਨਿਸਟ ਪਾਰਟੀ (ਮਾਰਕਸਵਾਦੀ) ਦੇ ਸੂਬਾਈ ਸਕੱਤਰ ਕਾਮਰੇਡ ਸੁਖਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਮਾਨਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ। ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਕਾਮਰੇਡ ਰਾਜੂ ਰਾਮ, ਸੁਰੇਸ਼, ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਜਸਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸੁਕਮ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਨ ਸਮੇਤ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਆਗੂ ਤੇ ਵਰਕਰ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਸਨ।

In view of the Municipal Corporation and Municipal Council elections scheduled for tomorrow in Barnala district, elaborate election and security arrangements have been put in place under the leadership of District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Mr. Harpreet Singh IAS.

Returning Officer for Municipal Corporation Barnala-cum-Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mr. Vivek Kumar Modi IAS, today visited the sensitive and hyper sensitive polling booths including those located in Akalgarh Basti, Gandhi Basti and FCI Godown areas.

Returning Officer informed that elections are being held for 48 wards of Municipal Corporation Barnala, for which 95 polling booths have been established and 124 polling parties have been deployed.

He further stated that sensitive and hyper-sensitive polling booths were inspect- ed today by him as well as by the Assistant Returning Officers.

Mr. Modi added that all instructions issued by the State Election Commission are being strictly followed and complete videography of polling booths will also be conducted.

CEO appeals to voters of Punjab to offer maximum cooperation with BLOs

Punjab State targets 90 percent pre-mapping before Special Intensive Revision (SIR) begins. Disclosing the same today, Chief Electoral Officer Punjab Mrs. Anindita Mitra said that during pre-SIR mapping in Punjab State, more than 84 percent voters have been successfully mapped. During this mapping, the SIR conducted in Punjab State in the year 2003 is being used as a basis for matching with the current voter lists. She said that even if a voter is not pre-mapped, the voter will still have to fill the enumer- ation form(EF) given by BLO and submit it to the BLO, after which the name of the concerned voter will be added to the draft roll. Chief Electoral Officer Punjab Mrs. Anindita Mitra appealed to the voters of Punjab to participate in the SIR in large numbers and offer maximum cooperation to the BLOs.
